WHY ME?
At this point you might be picturing me as sinewy and lanky with long naturally-graying hair, living off the earth, wearing Birkenstocks, born into a pious and spiritual life, and traveling with asinging bowl and sage. And you couldn’t be further from the truth (except for the Birkenstocks)!I was a big, brash, tough, outdoorsy kid, growing up in the rural Central Valley of California—the exciting territory of legendary Chief Stanislaus (born as Cucunichi of the Miwok Tribe), a rebellion against the Spanish and Mexicans in 1828.
My family lived in a beautiful spot close to the river, perfect for an adventurous and freewheeling childhood. My home life was full of love, and at times also chaotic, unsettling and sometimes violent. At a young age I witnessed some things that I shouldn’t have. When I was eight years old my momleft my stepdad, who was a good man and likely suffering from PTSD. After my mom left him, some caring soul told me, “Well, now YOU’RE the man of the house.” I took that to heart, alongwith a strong sense of protecting the underdog and a responsibility to make sure everyone wasokay, especially my mom and little sister.
So, I took on a lot of stuff at a really young age—grew up too fast—but I don’t see any of it asgood or bad. It just happened and helped form the person I am today, most of which I’m pretty happy with.

You have to be asking that question by now, or I am thinking I misdiagnosed my target audience. I wanted to write about using the principles of sustainability to radically improve people’s lives.
Most of the time when the issue of sustainability comes up we are talking about using “less”; less energy, less water, less this and that.
